I am the Native American photographer, behind UP Flotography, and I am proud to call Michigan's Upper Peninsula my home. I am a member of the Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians, and my traditional Anishnaabe name is Kiishik Nin, it means Sky Man.
For me, photography is about capturing the beauty around us, that everyone walks right by, it's about getting outside, exploring places I have never been, as well as visiting places I have been a hundred times, and capturing the scenery that makes the Upper Peninsula such a unique and special place. From the waterfalls and forests, to Lake Superior sunrises and sunsets, Northern Lights and the Milkyway, the variety of wildlife, and the many hidden places scattered across the Upper Peninsula, I am always ready for another adventure.
I have always enjoyed being outdoors, hiking, snowshoeing, exploring, and simply taking the time to enjoy and appreciate the beauty around me. Photography gave me a way to share the way I see the Upper Peninsula, with other people.
UP Flotography was created from my passion to shoot long exposure waterfalls, capturing the flow, and that just expanded my curiosity and drive. I began to challenge myself to learn more techniques, and got into night photography, and now some wildlife. My goal is to capture the beauty and character of the U.P. and create photographs that let people take a piece of the Yoop home with them.
I offer my photography in a variety of formats, including prints on metal, canvas, and paper, because I believe these images should be more than something you scroll past on a screen. They should be something you want to hang on your wall, converse about, or give as a gift, and enjoy for years to come.
Whether it's a place you've visited a hundred times, or a hidden corner of the U.P. you've never seen before, I hope my photography gives you that same feeling I get, when I am hiking out in it. The gratitude and appreciation to be able to be here.
Thank you for stopping and supporting a local photographer, and taking the time to view the U.P. through my eyes - Kiishik Nin, UP Flotography
Take only pictures, leave only footprints
Please remember to respect and appreciate the beautiful nature areas we have, keep them litter free, don't harm the wildlife or plants and trees. take with you, what you bring in.
